Photovoltaic (PV) Systems is a type of Renewable Energy System that in the past two decades (1990 – 2010) have grown to a $82 billion global business1. This strong growth has been driven by public policy, falling PV systems costs, rising PV systems reliability and increasing utility rates. In addition to the financial savings, PV Systems provide a clean “green” energy with no noise or pollution. The installation is flexible and scalable. Since PV Systems contain no moving parts, they are extremely reliable and require minimal maintenance throughout their useful life. (It is standard for modern PV cell modules to have a 25 year warranty.)

The following diagram describes a general Photovoltaic (PV) System:

  1. Sun (Approximately 1,368 W/m² of solar radiation hit Earth each day2.)

  2. PV Cell Module Array (Monocrystalline Silicon, Polycrystalline Silicon, Ribbon Silicon)

  3. (Optional) Charge Controller (Etc)

  4. (Optional) Batteries (Lead Acid: Opened, Lead Acid: Closed)

  5. Inverter (String Inverters, Micro-Inverters)

  6. PV System Disconnect (Utility Grid, Engine Generators, etc)

  7. Utility Meter (Bidirectional)

  8. Residential or Commercial Building (Refrigerators, Air Conditioners, Televisions, Luminaries, Motors, etc)
